Party Positions on ID Cards
This page summarises the positions of the main political parties in Scotland, based
on their public statements.
The Conservative Party
The Conservative party appear to support ID Cards in principle but oppose the
proposed Bill in practice. The English party abstained from the recent Westminster
Third Reading of the Bill, the Scottish party voted in favour of the recent
Holyrood motion condemning the ID Card Bill.
The Labour Party
The Labour Party is introducing compulsory National Identity Cards in Westminster.
The official Labour Party position is therefore strongly in favour. However many
individual Labour MPs and MSPs oppose the plan.
The Liberal Democratic Party
The Lib-Dems oppose ID Cards. The party supports NO2ID.
The Scottish Green Party
The Scottish Green Party opposes ID Cards. The party supports NO2ID.
The Scottish National Party
The SNP opposes ID Cards.
The Scottish Socialist Party
The Scottish Socialist Party opposes ID Cards. The party supports NO2ID.
